What did you think about on the highway this morning?

Well… That way too many people talk on the phone while driving…. Not using those Star Trek bluetooth things either – I’m talking like one hand on the wheel and the other holding their damn headset to their yapping, distracted head.

Then I thought there probably really should be stricter laws to enforce handsfree use while driving.

Then I wondered how much longer till we have cars with autopilot…..

Then I figured when we do I wondered what kind of laws would have to be written to manage that.

Would some routes, like highways, be autopilot only?

Then I figured cars will need another light added to them… Sure it’ll seem wierd at first – but don’t you remember when 3rd brake lights came out? I do… they were only a novelty for a few years before they bcomeing ubiquitous.

So… these lights would signal the car is in auto-pilot… being driven by machine.

But what would the light be? I mean – what would it be to signal humans near by that a machine is in autonomous mode?

Would a new international symbol for “robot” have to be developed?

Assuming we’re just going to start seeing more and more automation in our everyday lives – you’d see the little icon all over the place… lighting up on your vaccum cleaner when you were using your iPhone to control it….

or maybe flashing on the automatic lawnmower…
garbage truck drones?
grocery cart fetchers?
and so on and so on and son on.

besides… the machines will need a symbol to rally under when they overthrow us.

Anyway… So then I started thinking what the hell that symbol would be…

It would have to be universal…

I kept coming back to 20th century science-fiction imagery.

that seemed like a cheep copout…

but then I pulled into the garage and parked.

yeah… so that was like the morning commute.

Anyone want to take a stab at that symbol though? I personally think this is a puzzle begging to be solved by minusbaby

wait.. wasn’t I bitching about peple talking on the phone while driving?

isn’t that as bad as people who wander off in odd chains of thought while driving?

So I don’t remember what I was crawling around for when I stumbled onto this guys’ portfolio of characters he’s created for video games.

Sexy, virtual characters fashioned out of data and thin air is nothing new…. I’ve seen digital big busted babes for over a decade… of course with our attraction-set we have to wait for action fantasy games to come out featuring meat-eating hair-balls to get us to look twice.

/digress

anyway – the tech to create this content seems to be getting cheaper / easier.

This all set off some interesting conversations over the weekend about “artificial” life mimicking “real” life and visa versa.

notes:
1. The kids (20-somethings) today look like Anime characters…. We went to AMP with Steve, Leah and their friend Jennifer after diner on Saturday and Kevin kept on insisting we’d walked into a Final Fantasy game.

2. The concept of a star-trek “holodeck” is silly….. we’ll learn how to manipulate the mind to make you “think” you’re experiencing something long before we learn to assemble / disassemble / animate matter.

So with prediction in mind, I’d like you to meat Tog (pictured), our future virtual personal chef / landscaper and driver.

You’ll find me in my 80’s, rolled over to the console most days jackEDin to the cranial interface going for long Lakeshore drives and plotting flower-bed geometry.

back-up

Worked… (surprise).

Stopped by Daniel’s house after work to set ISPQ up for him on his new laptop and perform a backup… He gets on-call, on-site tech support for his Mac… anytime… anywhere…. I haven’t paid for a haircut in years… it’s a nice arrangement.

Yet another person around me got one of those new black iBooks. (I bought one for Kevin a little earlier this year – he loves his.)

It’d be great if I can get just one more year out of my PB before retiring it.

Drobo

I think I said that last year too.

The next big purchase is going to be one of *these*. (It’s a very cool toy for data-pack rats.
