commentary = “Männer Wie Wir”, (English release: “Guys and Balls”) came via Netflix… It’s a German stab at the seemingly inexhaustable European Soccer Film Formula. (A group of misfits unite through soccer, overcome their personal demons and find redemption through winning a show-down game with “the bad guys”.)

some say formula…. some say intentional cliché.

I’m going to say both since this flick put “gay” into the formula.

The story’s heroes (the misfits) were pulled from every chapter in the MO-manual.

Homosexuals (en mass) seem to be the only group that doesn’t get too offended by standing in front of the stereotype carnival mirror…. actually – I’m going to really take a wildly irresponsible stab here and say: “I think we find a sort of self dismissing comfort in them.”

The first time a “bear triad” showed up in a film using stereotypes I figured it was just John Waters showing off just how weird he could be.

But here’s one showing up in a cast of exaggerated archetypes. How annoyingly mainstream.

The flick wasn’t bad… can’t say we were captivated by anything other than the comfortable embarrassment of sitting in front of that circus mirror for two hours.
