MOve?

vote

We voted yesterday. We were three of the 432,497 votes against amending the Missouri Constitution to permanently define marriage as a union between a “man and a woman”.

1,049,571 people voted for it.

I wonder if back in the 1960’s if it was put to a “vote” to allow interracial couples to marry, it would pass? I bet you it wouldn’t.

The motives and means behind how Amendment Number 2 wound up on our ballot is beyond me.

Same-Sex marriages “were” already illegal in Missouri, so to chisel this into our state constitution doesn’t make sense.

We’ve enjoyed a certain luxury of being able to emotionally detach from this stink-pot, primarily because it doesn’t apply to “us”.

How could this much angst be caused by gay couples’ desire for legal recognition of their commitment and have the rights to do things like visit one another in the hospital or leave property and wealth to each-other in the event of death.

How “exactly” is that an attack on heterosexual marriage and an unravelling or our moral fiber?

The only thing I can think of is that this boils down to an argument over the use and/or origin of a word. Let this one go down in the history books as the first time people’s rights have been compromised through a syntax disagreement.

Kevin’s father put it so eloquently – I wish I had wrote down his exact words… Here’s an attempt at paraphrasing:

“This has become an argument over the use of a word and not the actual rights at stake. Let the Christians have their eight letters. Call your unions something else. You’re Gay! – Surely you can come up with a more fabulous word.”

I tend to agree with him. The activist pushed too hard and in the wrong places… and the majority has pushed right back.

The great right political diversion continues and at the expense of the homosexual… The last, now proven vast, civil-rights frontier for this country.

What worries me deeply is the energy and polarization created by this. Reports came in over the weekend of “NO on 2” signs being set on fire in people’s yards.

We passed an intersection of a road, lined with a half mile long of people demonstrating for Amendment #2 and shouting all sorts of anti-gay sentiments.

I’d never witnessed anything like this before, outside of documentary footage, and always figured “those” sorts of things only happened in Kansas. My heart shot into my throat and I could barely speak for a half an hour later.

Loveably paranoid Kevin lightly suggested we consider moving out of state: “What if this just gets worse? What if this doesn’t settle down after the election and both sides keep pushing… getting angrier? What will we do? Maybe we should look into reloca…”

I interrupted: “absolutely not… – this is my,… no… this is OUR home – we will not be intimidated into relocation over such empty, misdirected bullshit. If things get worse, which I doubt they will,… remember it’s the very same people who have fought to keep the American public armed… I will, without hesitation, blow the god damn kneecaps off of anyone who would venture onto our property to threaten my family.”

*That’s not a threat… it’s not a challenge… It’s a promise.

This however… is not a blog.

door2door

Maybe nothings changed and I’ve just been sensitized… But it “seems” like you see a lot more political candidate bumper stickers and yard signs this election season than ever before. Not four hours after making that observation while picking up Chad from work – our doorbell rang.

Of course, for us xenophobes,… panic ensued.

I opened the door to a woman who appeared to be in her early 40’s holding a clipboard and a stack of pamphlets.

“Hi.. blah blah blah blah blah something blah blah Missouri Senate” – is all I really heard as she made her opening and handed me the flyer.

Mid-Spiel I skimmed the flyer to see what the person wanted… “Oh.. You’re out promoting a senatorial can….” (I stumbled noticing the photo on the flyer matched the face of the woman standing on my front stoop).. “idate”.

I tried not to look too shocked…. We’d been visited before within the last couple of weeks by folks delivering election-year flyers – but none from the actual candidate themselves.

Jeanne Kirkton, the mom and critical care nurse turned MO. Senatorial Candidate, followed me around the side of the house so I could tend to the burgers I was burning on the grill. She talked about her campaign concerns (issues), which ironically, is healthcare. (Creepy coincidence considering the non-blog post I had made just yesterday).

It felt more like I was talking to a PTA mom than a political candidate which at first made me worry about how she’d fair standing up against your more typical, sidestepping and bullying politician stereotypes… but then I realized something as I observed her talking. You could see genuine passion in her eyes and a sense of defiance in her posture as key topics came up. Hell hath no furry like a pissed off mom… (I know this one first hand)… My doubts vanished as quickly as they appeared.

I sent her an email thanking her for taking the time to personally introduce herself and quizzed her about the upcoming proposed Amendment to the Missouri Constitution regarding same-sex marriage. Her reply was as straight forward as her manner:

“It is no coincidence that the proposed marriage amendment to the Constitution was brought up federally and in many states simultaneously. It’s a top down diversionary strategy. But moreover, it’s simply mean-spirited, divisive and unethical. It wouldn’t be any different if someone suggested that Asians or obese people could not marry or have equal protection under the law.

Go Jeanne!!!. You earned our vote.

patriot X

an american

I’m sick of digesting my own internal organs over a political structure and representational democracy that has fallen into disrepair since the last great war.

Between the scandals, partisan posturing and diversionary events,. . . the far right’s hard push for the return of “american values” and the far left’s rally for revolution…. I think most of the country has forgot the basics.

Here’s a refresher course.

The official PR-Release reads: This is a free country whereby I have freedom of religion, self expression and the pursuit of happiness…

If you lie, cheat, steal, harm or try to infringe on other people’s rights guranteed in said PR-Release – then… you’re something other than an American… and a hypocrite. PERIOD.

The sooner you whacked out rights and you angst ridden lefties out there stop running in circles biting at one another’s tails, stand up and take a moment to see the forest – you’ll come to a similar conclusion I’ve drawn recently:

The sun will rise.

The Republicans will lie and steal.

The Democrats will coddle the undeserving.

I will take a shit in the morning.

and…

We’ll all be worm food in the end.

Happy Independence Day.. And to any individual, administration or religion out there that feels a need to infringe, impair or edit this independence and freedom: Fuck you – come and get it.
