the tax man cometh

the lecture

Between working on that logo project, chatting with Iraq and digesting my own internal organs since 2:30am, I was blurry eyed at best when the doorbell rang. It was 9:58am – Don the tax man was painfully punctual.

I forget just how interesting Don is. He and his partner of 15 years are a living, breathing example in defense of the whole “marriage argument”. Both 60-somethings, they’re good natured folks and openly refer to themselves as “the old farts”.

Don’s been a CPA and high-end tax consultant since I wanted to grow up and be a vacuum cleaner salesman. We’ve called on him to come in and help us clean up our taxes which have become a bit of a mess over the past three years.

Within an hour of “business tax organization 101″, Kevin and I were more informed than we ever had been on the subject… (and wondered what the hell our previous neglectful accounting firm was doing for the past three years).

After three hours of talking, weighing options and doing some damage control – we handed him our stuff and hired him. In “quasi-retirement”, he’s not interested in taking on a lot of accounts – and claims he’s enjoying taking on just a handful of “special needs” clients who have made a mess of things.

“Special Needs”… indeed… In the big wide wold of business school – Kevin and I ride the short-bus.

When he left, he didn’t blow smoke up our ass… We’ve got some serious work ahead of us…. but somehow I feel a little better because we’ve made the move to get back on the right track.

Sorry… can’t blog… Have to finish preparing files for the tax man.
