tune in with tomatoes

So I mentioned that my dad sent us tomato plants…. Now mind you – I’m not talking a packet of seeds or anything… Nope.. These came from some boutique nursery that sells heirloom tomatoes.. They arrive via UPS as fully mature baby plants, carefully packaged by hand.

Without question – all of the great things happening out in the yard has been because of Kevin and Chad…. Oh sure, I’ll go out and water here and there… and I consult about design issues… and god knows I enjoy all the flowers – but it’s really their thing.

Meanwhile I’ve always had a vague interest in vegetable gardening but never messed with it…. So… Finally there was an opportunity for me to have my own little something to tend to outside.

Part of the preparation of the soil, (I pot-planted them), involved mixing different components together…

I started mixing using a claw, a trowel, a shovel and a stick with little success…. until…. I put the tools down and started mixing it all by hand.

This was working much better… then I took off my ring and my watch and really got down in there up to my elbows and mixed this stuff up… then..

damn it…. I had another one of those “tune-in” moments.

All this organic material between my fingers… the fresh organic smell of the potting mix… the realization that this stuff will generate one of my favorite delicacies later this season: “Home Grown Maydurs”.

I just got…. really into it.

If you ever wanted to find God, try putting that story-book down and grab a shovel.

I’m attempting to keep from sounding like a complete hippy – not blogging.
