We had to stop by Target for a few things and I couldn’t help but notice the little front section where they put seasonal impulse items for a buck a throw.
There were mostly fitness theme stuff, (presumably because “fitness” is a popular New Year’s resolution)…. Nothing out of the ordinary to notice… well.. except for the colors… It appears the *personally* disturbing brown and sky blue color combo I’ve been seeing in women’s fashions for the last few years has broken through to other objects…
This all got me wondering about how these color pair cliches start….
My assumption is the poop + sky cliche started in women’s fashion…. but I don’t think that was the case going back in time to the next closest cliche in memory: piss ‘n charcoal… (my favorite)… I *think* that started in personal electronics, (Sony portable sport gear) – and THEN spread to jackets, shoes and the rest of fashion.
I’m going to theorize that as everything gets more homogenized, concepts like “Fashion” become more general in their influence… Things like clothing fashion, industrial design, consumer goods, graphic design, furniture, etc. etc. etc. – all start to merge together under one influence…. Exciting in a way because of all the cross over… Downright frightening in a mono-culture sort of way.
But never-mind that – I’m just twittering on about color pairs of recent history which have spread to more than just sweaters….. which I really should be thinking of a clever gimmick to end this journal entry.
