yup…

Yup… More bugs…

This little critter Chad found hanging out on one of the pepper plants would have turn into a sphinx moth, (*shudder*) – but he’ll never see his chrysalis stage.

Those little white things stuck to his body are wasp eggs… The larvae will hatch *into* the host and feast on the stunned, but still alive, caterpillar.

Pretty gory huh?

Nowhere near as frightening as the big,…. hairy…. moth this little guy would grow into if left alone.

Come on – you want to look closer.

what? why not? Chicken?

i keep finding bugs in my hard drive

I’m finding Chad’s bug pics too interesting not to share… “How” he’s able to find all these different manner of critters out in the yard is something of a mystery… one I *never* want to solve since I’m a big ole squeamish nelly-gag whenever I see anything scurry along the floor, walls or ceiling.

If he keeps this up, I think I’m going to try and throw his shots into an iPhoto book and order some for the nieces and nephews.

Kids like bugs.

I like chicken.

the monarchs are coming

The praying mantises have started appearing in the garden / carport. (We have three this year).

For not really paying attention – I’m noticing the patterns… Our little Mantis friends show up during the last stretch of warm weather on the road to Fall… ugh.. that means the Monarchs will be here soon too. (*insert horror movie soundtrack here*)

Elise loved her cake and the can opener we bought her. I think you’re officially middle-aged when you can get excited about buying (and receiving as gifts) things like small appliances. I’m also looking forward to getting underwear for Christmas.

Tomorrow will be the first Wednesday “studio day” I’ve been able to take in months… Some freelance work, tax prep, PJs and pizza will be on the agenda I think

Meanwhile…. chicken.

chadapillers

We had planted dill this year. I was going to make my mom’s Swedish meatball recipe… (calls for dill weed) – but it looks like I’ll be getting mine from the farmers market instead. Chad (of course) was the first to notice the strange looking blooms and odd breezeless movement of the plant.

Black swallow tail caterpillars have moved in and set up shop on our dill plant… Like… 5 of em..

Come to later find out that they also really like parsley too… (there’s two on our parsley plant as well).

The guys decided to leave them be since they’d already devoured most of the plant.

Chad did some more of his macro photography to document them… They’re really good – here’s a big version

Of course I hope they find somewhere else to go before they turn into…. *shudder*… butterflies.

Right… ok… time to chicken.
